A Room With a Shoe

As long as there are feet, as long as there are back-packs, coats and karate belts, as long as all boys need to shed whatever burden they carry upon entering a building, there should be mudrooms.

Our house didn’t have one.

These amazing closet mudroom transformations first caught my eye on pinterest. First there was this one because it’s just gorgeous, but not as big or the right function for us. Then I saw this one…

…and it appealed to me because it looked nice, but also seemed to match the space and function I was envisioning a little bit better. Of course I added my own ideas as you’ll see below.

I couldn’t be more grateful to David Maasen and Drew Machado, for not just listening to my idea, but really checking at every turn to make sure I was getting the mudroom I wanted. What a blessing!!!

Special thanks to Sherri VonLobstein for confirming my hair-brained dream of a pantry to mudroom transformation wasn’t insane, Rachel Cherry for turning cluttered shelves into an opportunity and giving me eyes to see what I DIDN’T need, to David and Rachel Maasen and Drew and Lyndsay Machado for giving up three Saturdays to make a mudroom for the price of a few good meals and a lot of pie. Friendships are pretty much awesome.

The transformation:

And…AFTER!

It has been so nice to come home to this:

The value in a space like this has been incalculable for me. The boys use it, though I do have to remind them, they seem to enjoy their assigned shoe box, cubby and hooks. They don’t fight over the space, instead they joke and laugh with each other while getting their shoes and coats on as we are headed out the door. I thought it would make our coming home easier, but it has helped with our heading out as well.

I am loving this space!

  1. I love this! It turned out great. We have a mirror with hooks by the back door for coats, purses, the dog leash, etc. etc. That thing gets loaded down! I wish I had more space for something this functional.

I have to ask though…where are your groceries?

  2. There is a little cut out space under the stairs that is open to the laundry room (across from the new mudroom) and I have put shelves up in there for a pantry. I would have included pictures of that too, but I haven’t painted the shelves yet so it doesn’t look very good. 🙂
